lyrics

we were making love on the day of truce in the human battle with the world,
when the sun went down we glowed with light but nobody said a word,
as the cannons cooled as the rifles slept, we looked out on the garden,
and we struck our camp and we hit the road til we came upon the desert

oh, the air was cleaner stars were brighter than any we had seen before,
but we grew hungry, and some of us angry, as we scoured the fruitless floor,
we found sand and we found rocks, but water was not there,
and some of us lay down and wept in the crystal desert air:

'what have we won, what have we lost, have our battles been in vain?
has mother earth turned her back? Will we ever see love again?'

and then a voice arose within and everyone heard its truth:

"let go your life, let go your greed, let go those things you do not need
take your food, and take your drink, and let love take you, to the brink"

on the day of truce as the weapons slept, music most strange was heard,
and everyone sang along, though nobody knew the words,
the rhythm falls upon your feet and moves you in the dance,
and everyone you ever meet, you never meet by chance,

put down your knives, your crosses too, put away your book,
set aside your grievances, give back what you took,
for there is time, and time again, the circle comes around,
but nobody can ever live on broken dirty ground,

so take your time and find your space and live within it whole
and make love, and love your love, and make love your goal.
